Making One Bookmark Public Without Making Them All Public

Your bookmarks on X are locked to your own account, full stop. There's no setting anywhere that lets someone else see what you've saved, and that's the right default for most of what gets bookmarked. But every so often something's worth pointing other people at directly, and X gives no way to do that without retweeting it, which is a different action with different intent.

Birdfeeder puts a visibility toggle on every individual bookmark instead of treating the whole list as one all-or-nothing switch. Flip one bookmark public and it shows up on your Birdfeeder profile. Leave the rest alone and they stay exactly as private as they were. The first time you flip that toggle, Birdfeeder sets up a public profile page for you automatically, so there's no separate "enable public profiles" step to find first.

The handle for that profile is its own thing, deliberately separate from your X or Bluesky username. It follows the same format X uses, letters, numbers, and underscores, up to 15 characters, and it's append-only under the hood: renaming your handle doesn't delete the old one, it just stops pointing at you. That means nobody can claim a handle you gave up and take over the account it used to point to.
