What Happens to Your X Bookmarks When an Account Gets Deleted or Suspended

When someone deletes a tweet, or X suspends their account, the tweet disappears from your bookmarks too. X does not keep a copy for you. The only way to keep a bookmarked tweet after that is to have saved your own copy of it before it was gone.

Why did my Twitter bookmarks disappear?

I get some version of this question often enough that it's in Birdfeeder's FAQ. Most of the time the bookmarks are still there. It's usually one of three things:

1. The menu moved. On iOS, X put Bookmarks into a new "History" tab, together with Likes, Videos and Articles. On the web, or on accounts X hasn't switched over yet, Bookmarks is still in the old place.
2. The list is slow to load. X's bookmark list sometimes shows nothing for a while before the posts appear.
3. The tweet is really gone. The author deleted it, made their account protected, or the account was suspended.

The first two fix themselves. The third one doesn't.

Can I get a deleted bookmarked tweet back?

No. If the author deletes a tweet, X removes it everywhere, including from your bookmarks. If an account is suspended, everything it posted goes with it. X bookmarks are a way to save things inside X. They don't protect you from X removing them.

How to keep a copy of your X bookmarks

This is the reason Birdfeeder stores the full text of every bookmark instead of only a link back to X. Birdfeeder checks your X bookmarks several times a day and copies each new one into your own archive, including images. If the original tweet is deleted a week later, your copy stays. Search and everything else read from that copy, not from X.

Can other people see that I bookmarked their tweet?

No. X bookmarks are private. There is no notification and no public counter, unlike a like or a repost. Birdfeeder keeps it that way. Your archive stays private unless you choose to make single bookmarks public.

What else you can do with the saved copy

Once a tweet is in your archive, you can search it. Birdfeeder has full-text search across all your bookmarks, so you can find one line from a thread you saved eight months ago without scrolling. X's own bookmark tab has no search box at all.
